10 March
We are learning about time and temperature. I would like to learn more about time zones and about how it is a different time around the world.
We'll definitely be looking at this during this unit Jordan. Mrs. Breeds.

15 March
W.A.L.T. We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.
GMT is Greenwich Mean Time.It is where they start the timing if you look at a map and find it, it is in the middle and everything on it's right is ahead of it and everything on it's left is behind it.
This is a start - you also needed to discuss the time zone 'lines' on a map and how to use these, and give an example.

19 March
We are learning about the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit for temperature.
The formula to get from Fahrenheit to Celsius is to subtract thirty two, times it by five then divide it by nine (and the opposite for Celsius to Fahrenheit). In NZ we use Celsius but in other places such as America the use Fahrenheit to measure what the temperature is.
C=(F-32)x5 /9
A good explanation. Just be careful saying 'the opposite', it is more clear to actually give the second formula.
OK

25 March
WALT:Use algebraic thinking to solve decimal subtracting problems.
Eg:
5.6 - 2.84
+.16 +.16
5.76 - 3 = 2.76
You have learnt this strategy well. I would like to know how you feel about using it.
I Find this startegy reasonbly easy.

29 March
WALT:Use temperature as a strategy to help us add and subtract integers. Say you had a -5 degree bath and it was too cold so you decided to take away -24 degrees. It would add up to +19 degrees.
Eg: -5 - +24 =+19
It is a very good strategy to use it is simple and easy to remember.
I am pleased you liked this strategy and find it easy to use. It is always useful to learn new strategies in a context. TC

31 March
WALT: Add don't subtract when working on decimal subtraction problems. It can be easy to do it this way in some cases but I prefer to use the other strategy.
Eg: 3.25 - 1.73 =
1.73 + =3.25
=1.63

19 April
WALT:Use a number of different problem solving strategies to solve complex questions.
Today I learnt a number of different problem solving strategies that I didn't know about such as trial and error ,doing the question in reverse and doubling and halving. You can also draw diagrams and graphs to help solve comlplex problems. My goal is to learn to use three or more different strategies while solving a question instead of using the same strategy continuously.
An excellent goal Jordan. Remember it is important to know which strategies are good to use with which problems.

27 April
WALT:Draw a histogram.Decide which type of data a histogram shows.
Last week we were learning about and how to use different types of graphs.Today I learnt how to draw and understand what to use a histogram for. Some of the other graphs we learnt about were:
Stem and Leaf,
Dot plot,
Scatter Plot,
Pictographs,
and four different types of Bar Graphs (there is the Double Bar Graph, the Column gaph, a Histogram and a normal bar graph.
I think they are all reasonably easy. The Stem and Leaf Graph and the Bar Graphs were just revision but I didn't know the rest of them. The Dot Plot was pretty simple and so was the Pictograph but the Scatter Plot was a little harder.
Remember the scatterplot is great in showing the relationship between two variables.

7 May
WALT: Draw and interpret Box and Whisker plots.
I now understand what an upper and lower quartile are and I also know waht and interquartile is. I know also know what this graph can display. They can display the range of data, the median, and the first and third quartiles. At first this graph was hard to rea but once it was explained how to use it i found it reasonably easy. Sorry it took a while to write this journal entry I had a very busy weekend.

21 May
Once again sorry for not being able to write my journal I have been very busy at school and home.
WALT:Use excel to explain data in pairs.
The rest of extension maths class went on a excel tutorial on the internet while I checked my questionare with Mrs Breeds. I have now finished my questionare. Also on Wednesday we had the Olympiad maths test, and I scored 5/5. I am very very pleased with my outcome.
That is an excellent result and the questionnaire is looking great too. Lets hope we get a lot of responses in very quickly for you.

24 May
I have finished my questionare. Mrs Breeds said she would give them to all the class teachers and now I just have to wait to get them back.

31 May
I need to practice reading the questions properly and then thinking about my answer before I say/write it down.
I need to improve my time keeping abilities. I tend to leave alot of things until the last minute.
I now have most of my maths surveys back, and most of them are filled in correctly.
Do you need any help in putting this together Jordan as we do want to use the data you have collected for school purposes also. Let Mrs Breeds or I know.
I'm alright.

16 June
I ahev finished my statistical investigation, mobile, poster and glossary. Today we did another olympiad test and I got 3/5.An OK score but I think I can do better.
